Time of the Season

The following is a speech I made for my friends Brett and Heather, at their wedding:
In order to come up with a few ideas on what to talk about today, I read some history pieces on marriage, and I can't tell you how many times the idea of ownership was mentioned. We still see it today, when a father "gives" away his daughter.

Personally, it always made me feel funny because all it made me think of is that I must not be good enough to be owned by somebody to then be given away.

Joking aside though, the theme that I did latch onto was the idea that two people could own each other's emotions. And with that, the implicit trust that such a responsibility carries. And I am very happy to be here today to congratulate two wonderful people, who love each other very much, and are close friends of mine - that they've made such an implicit bond, explicit. It's always nice to see a happy ending.

There's no real advice that I can give. Certainly, that's not my role here. Instead, I have to admit that my role of support is of course much turned into that of admiration. One of the most amazing things I witness is when a couple works very well together in a united front that they represent. And with that notion, there is the idea that you can take any situation together. All of a sudden, together you don't just fight the fights against the world that you can win; instead you fight the fights that need fighting.

I'll be honest with you, I'm not completely sure what that means, but I do know that it's an amazing thing when you witness two people, who march to the beat of their own drummer, all of a sudden find themselves in sync with each other. Congratulations to the both of you, I love you.
